When Laurie Ezzell’s father, the legendary regional journalist Ben Ezzell, died in 1993, Ezzell found she still had one unfailing mentor — Mary Kate Tripp.
Tripp and the elder Ezzell studied journalism together at West Texas A&M University, and the two stayed close friends while Tripp served two stints as the Amarillo Globe-News regional editor and Ezzell was co-editor and co-publisher of The Canadian Record from 1948 until his death.
“When my dad died and I took over the paper, I got notes from her on a fairly regular basis,” Laurie Ezzell said. “Because my dad wasn’t there to help me and encourage me, her encouragement just meant that much more because I knew how much respect they had for each other.”
